The first step would be to see how many of the books she'd be likely to read are actually available as e-books. E-book readers aren't suited to pictures, although at nine I guess that's less important anyway, but if there aren't many books for her age available then I'd say that's the more limiting factor.
I'd have a look on Amazon to see what books are available, and if there's enough to make it worthwhile, then <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2Fgp%2Foffer-listing%2FB002Y27P46%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref_%3Ddp_olp_all_mbc%26condition%3Dall%23&tag=xstb-21&linkCode=ur2&camp=1634&creative=19450" title="pick up a refurbished Kindle for less than £80" rel="nofollow">pick up a refurbished Kindle for less than £80</a>.

I would like to know if this would be a suitable gift for my nine year old. She loves to read and is very interested in this item but I want to be realistic. Is this just crazy for a nine year old?

My main objection to PS3/Xbox as kid's consoles is that there aren't as many kiddie games as there are for Nintendo's machines.

You do raise a good point about the Kinect, though - it could certainly make games more accessible to kids. Having said that, my 10-month-old already seems to have understood how to use the Harmony One to turn on the TV&PS3 so she can watch her Sing and Sign DVD; she just hasn't grasped the concept of "daddy took it out so he can watch Buffy".

I too was a silicon outcast for a while - an Acorn Electron (bought off my A-level Biology teacher) instead of a C64 (which I did eventually get from a car boot sale) before also working my proverbials off in Tesco to get the Amiga 500. Those were the days...

And yes, I was the kid with the Spectrum 128+2 when all my mates had Commodore 64s (showing my age enough?). Considering how relatively expensive these things were I should have just been grateful for what I had.

In the end I got a Saturday job and saved up for my own Amiga 500. £389 (over £700 in today's money) of my own hard-earned......so worth it.

Honestly having watched my 3yo trying to get to grips with a Wiimote I'd bin it and get an Xbox + Kinect if I had the cash to spare. I suspect waving at the screen would be much more intuitive than "point this at the tv".
